Money & Finances for Women

Mar’s Musing on Finances

This week on Mar’s Musings, I want to speak about Money, Finances and Women!

In the past months, I have had more and more women arriving to me who are facing a separation or divorce from their partners.

The story is either that the woman gave up her career or work to follow the husbands, and take care of the family… or on the other side of the spectrum that she was a breadwinner, bringing in the money but not taking care of the finances.

In both situations the main things I witness is the avoidance of taking care of the finances!

I understand that women pass through phases of motherhood and really melting into the family cocoon and being a mother - yet this topic cannot be left aside.

Many times women neglect their finances for themselves and then have to face that reality in an abrupt situation where they are almost forced into it - or have stayed in a marriage/family dynamic longer than they would have wished - due to this fear of dealing with their financial reality.

I understand that there may be a lack of knowledge, fears to look at it… but this cannot be avoided!

Unfortunately women are not protected like they used to through contracts, marriage agreements… I am saddened that in the 21st Century many women are facing this reality of separating and being left with little or nothing.

Women have to face it and the sooner you look at it, the less it haunts you, and the more planning and strategies you can make for the future.

If you do find yourself in this situation, know you are not alone and that you can turn this around at any time… now is the time to start!

This reminds me of the Chinese proverb about when to plant a tree: “ The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today”.

I’d say the same about starting to take care of your finances especially as a woman and to once and for all stop avoiding this topic of money!

Would love to hear from you, how does this resonate? What comes up?

Know that there are no silly situations, I know many women who have not had bank accounts, access to any accounts or dealt with any finances for over 30 years and are making the change to taking care of their money & finances for their futures.
