The Transformative Power of Mentorship
Mar's Musings on The Transformative Power of Mentorship
Today, I want to touch upon the profound power of mentorship and express my gratitude for all the incredible teachers, mentors, guides, and gurus who have come before me. At every stage of my journey, someone has come along to teach me, show me the way, open doors, or highlight new perspectives. These mentors have been invaluable, and I stand here today thanks to their guidance and wisdom.
One of the most important lessons I've learned is the importance of recognizing that I don't know everything. It's crucial to be humble enough to ask for help and seek out those who have walked the path before us. Whether it's through finding a mentor or calling in a guide, their support can be transformative.
If you are looking to guide or teach others, it's essential to seek out your own mentors and to put what you learn into action. Sometimes, people spend so much time learning from mentors that they never start their own journey. While learning is vital, so is taking action and applying those lessons in your life.
Today, I want to honour the mentors who have come before me. A lot of the work I am putting out into the world is possible because I've had incredible teachers along the way. For instance, Prem Baba who was my spiritual teacher for many years and guideding me on my path. I've also been inspired by many others from various fields, including my teachers at Schumacher College, such as Satish Kumar, Jenny Mckewn, and Patricia Shaw. Each of them has unlocked doors for me and enriched my journey.
Mentors aren't only those we formally recognize as teachers; they can be found in our everyday lives. For example, my son is one of my greatest teachers, constantly inspiring me and offering new perspectives. Dear friends around me also serve as mentors in different aspects of my life, and I hope I can do the same for them in return.
The idea is to surround yourself with mentors, inspirations, and teachers who help elevate you. We are here to grow, and if you're missing mentorship in one part of your life, look out for it. Mentorship doesn't always require formal sessions or payment; often, people around us are willing to offer a helping hand simply because they have the skills and the desire to support others.
Today, I want to inspire you to:
Reach Out for Help: If there's something you want to achieve or learn more about, don't hesitate to reach out to a mentor or ask for help.
Share Your Gifts: Recognize that you have unique gifts to share and that you can be a mentor and inspiration to others. It's a reciprocal relationship where we all learn and grow from each other.
Express Gratitude: Acknowledge and give thanks for the shoulders we stand on today. Our paths have been paved by those who came before us, and it's important to have humility and gratitude for their contributions.
Every piece of technology we use, every invention, and all the knowledge we acquire in school and beyond comes from great minds and dedicated people who have been here before us. Expressing gratitude opens us up to more opportunities for growth and connection.
If you ever feel alone, remember that there is always someone out there willing to help. Whether it's sending an email, joining a course, or reaching out to a friend, know that support is available. I've been helped by so many to get where I am today, and I am deeply thankful for each of them. Likewise, I'm grateful for everyone I've been able to mentor and help along the journey. You've all inspired me and taught me so much.
Let's open the path to mentorship and explore what it means to you. How can you connect with mentors in your life, and how can you be a mentor to others?
Thank you for being part of this journey. I look forward to continuing to share and learn together.
With gratitude,
Mar
