Investing in Time: The Value of a Purpose-Driven Break

Investing in Time: The Value of a Purpose-Driven Break

Welcome to this week’s edition of Mar's Musings, tuning in from Taíba, Brazil. Today, I want to explore what it means to take a purpose-driven break—a break that's not just about stepping away from work, but about deeply honouring time, presence, and the energy you bring back into your life.

This break has reminded me of the importance of creating intentional pauses in life. Planning time out—allowing ourselves space to truly rest and reset—creates room for new perspectives and fresh ideas. Here, I’ve found that the shift in surroundings, from the usual day-to-day to this beautiful place in Brazil, opened my mind in ways I didn’t expect. Space gives us room to think differently, tap into creativity, and find clarity on aspects of life that may go unnoticed in the daily routine.

One major insight I’ve had is the power of being offline. In the lead-up to this break, I focused intensely on wrapping up my work, condensing what would usually take a month into just a few days. That focus, combined with the motivation to fully unplug, brought an unexpected efficiency to my work. Being present—truly being here with my family, without the usual distractions—has been incredible. It’s a reminder of how rare it is to step fully into the moment in our usual routines, where distractions are often within arm’s reach.

This experience has also shown me the value of taking breaks consciously. Rather than simply going somewhere to “get away,” I’ve approached this time off with intention. On the plane, I caught up on an audiobook I’d been wanting to finish and tackled some tasks I’d left pending. Knowing I had this time dedicated to relaxation made me approach my work differently before I left, freeing me to be fully present now.

Returning to Brazil has been special for me in a new way. In the past, I came here for spiritual retreats and ceremonies. Now, I’m here just to be: to enjoy sports, share laughter with friends, savour amazing meals, and immerse myself in nature. This pure enjoyment of life without an agenda is something I realise I’d been craving.

I hope this inspires you to think about taking your own purpose-driven break, however big or small. What would it look like for you to step away and refresh, even for a day or two? And how might a conscious approach to planning that time shape the energy you bring back into your life?

Signing off from Brazil, I’m excited to keep learning and growing alongside each of you. Share your thoughts or experiences with me—I’d love to hear how you bring balance and intention into your breaks. Here’s to moving forward with purpose and joy.

With love from Brazil
Mar
